Winter Civil Ceremony: The Magic of a Fairytale Photo Shoot in Herastrau Park
It is often said that wedding photography depends entirely on the season, but an authentic love story always proves that magic and elegance have no season. It all started in the most natural way. The groom’s father, a wonderful man I used to meet often, shared with great joy in his voice that his son was about to have his civil ceremony—to get married “with official paperwork, ” as they say.
Knowing that I am a professional photographer and that my 14-year experience as a photojournalist guarantees that a family’s unique moments are captured flawlessly, he asked if I could shoot the event. My mind instantly jumped to warm summer days. Imagine my surprise when he told me: “Well, we’ve already set the date, the ceremony is on January 18th!” And that is how, in the middle of winter, I accepted the challenge of being by their side.
Detailed Planning: Three Locations and Unpredictable Weather
The official event took place at the Sector 2 Civil Registry Office in Bucharest. During the preparation phase, the biggest challenge was the unpredictability of winter. When I initially discussed it with the groom’s father, it was difficult to commit to a single outdoor photo shoot location because the weather forecast looked quite capricious.
As a professional who leaves nothing to chance, I established a backup strategy: I proposed three different locations, leaving the final decision to be made on the wedding day itself, depending on the weather conditions.
However, January had a wonderful surprise in store for us. On the day of the civil wedding, even though the thermometers showed freezing winter temperatures, we were blessed with a gorgeous, extremely sunny day. The bright and crisp sunlight gave us courage and helped us brave the biting cold, leading us to enthusiastically choose Herastrau Park (King Michael I Park).
Elegant Details and a Warm Atmosphere
I had known Daniel, the groom, for some time, but I met Maria for the first time on the wedding day. Our collaboration was excellent right from the start. I explained to them that nature in January wouldn’t offer the lush green colors of summer, but that the great winter light is ideal for artistic black and white photography, full of refinement and texture.
The attire chosen by the newlyweds was exceptionally elegant, perfectly complementing the minimalist landscape:
- The groom wore a remarkably elegant, impeccably tailored suit, which was quite thin for the cold temperatures outside.
- The bride stole the show in a long, emerald green velvet gown. It was an asymmetrical, one-shoulder design with one long sleeve and one bare shoulder—a stunning but extremely brave choice for the winter weather.
Joining us for the photo shoot in Herastrau was the groom’s younger brother. The strong bond and brotherly love between them could be felt at every step. He was thrilled to accompany us and quickly became the couple’s “guardian angel.” In the gallery below, you will even see a touching, candid moment: full of care, he went and bought hot tea so the newlyweds could warm up between photo sessions.
Candid Shots and Humor by the Frozen Lake
After taking a few sips of hot tea, Maria gave us one of the most delightful and genuine moments of the day. In a playful gesture, she flexed her “muscles” to Daniel, visually letting him know that she was strong, not cold, and that the photo shoot could go on. As a civil wedding photographer, I live for these candid moments that capture the real personality of the people in front of my lens.
Even though the park didn’t have the flowers or leafy trees we are used to, the white scenery, the rustic wooden gazebo, and the edge of the frozen lake provided the perfect backdrop for a series of unforgettable portraits.
Photographer’s Advice: Don’t Be Afraid of Cold Season Weddings!
This wonderful experience at Sector 2 and Herastrau Park is living proof that couples should not be afraid of the cold season when scheduling their civil ceremony or wedding. With proper planning, flexibility in choosing the location, and a bit of hot tea, winter offers a soft, clean light that beautifully enhances portrait photography.
